I have never been to Las Vegas, but I do have some thoughts about the health and the wellbeing of a large portion of their citizens. This actually has nothing to do with the fact that it is constantly referred to as “Sin City.” It actually has more to do with the makeup of the population being low wage earners and immigrants. When you have a city like this, it is not uncommon for the public hospitals to be very stretched. This means that with all of these individuals getting sick, and not having an option of where to go other than the local hospital, that the local emergency rooms are going to become very stretched and ineffective due to the large influx of people. I know from talking with different emergency room doctors that lots of times they feel that they can’t adequately treat all of the patients because you have patients coming in that need attention, but in no way need attention from an emergency room doctor. Rather they need prescriptions for a cold or for a flu. With this in mind, I think the doctors of the early 1970s decided that there needs to be an alternative to the emergency room. They created a network of local urgent care extra clinics in Las Vegas as a way to lessen the burden on the emergency rooms that are taking in patients that may not need that urgent attention. In regard to my concern about the uninsured and the low wage earners, I think that having these urgent care centers available is a really big boon for the population. I say this because without having the urgent care extra clinics in Las Vegas, these people would risk facing default if they could not pay their medical bills from going to the very expensive emergency rooms. Ii recently saw a stat that was talking about the number of defaults in our country and it is an incredible number. Nevertheless, I think that the thing that I really took away from that article was the fact that something like 60% of all defaults are from people that are just trying to pay off their medical bills. To me this is incredible. I was blown away that our country does not do more to protect these people and to make sure that health is not a function of wealth. Unfortunately, that does not seem like the case as it is right now. I think that some of the health care laws to come into effect will be great, but those need time to be implemented. In the time that it takes for the new health care rulings to take effect, I think that more and more people should seek out their local urgent care extra clinics in Las Vegas as a way to see urgent medical care, but not have to spend an arm and a leg to receive the care. I am very thankful that it’s an option for people in need.
