Dan Dakich Era: 2008-2008
≡ Category: Basketball | ≅ 1 Comment

It was a brief, yet memorable 40 days of Indiana University basketball. Ever see an ivory tower simply implode on its own weight? That was Hoosier hoops under Dan Dakich. (Okay, most of the blame can sensibly be put on Kelvin Sampson, since without his textualnanigans, Dakich is never anointed as a Big Ten coach, but <stephen_a>THE FACT REMAINS!</stephen_a>)
The era barely scratched April, and certainly didn’t make a dent in the second round of March Madness. Tomorrow Indiana will name Tom Crean head coach. Crean? That’s my detergent! He leaves Marquette, where he coached both Dwyane Wade and Dwyane Wade’s teammates.
So now Dan Dakich is sans head coach position. And Toledo still heads a head coach. Pleaseohpleaseohpleaseohplease. ◼ Indy Star

Dakich Stories, As Shared By BG Alum
≡ Category: Basketball, Bowling Green | ≅ Leave a Comment
Of all the Bowling Green-alum sports media socialites out there, I’m probably the only one who never did any actual reporting while in college. (Credibility is for chumps, if you ask me.) Therefore I’m unable to provide any anecdotal awesomeness of Dan Dakich during his days at Bowling Green.
But that’s where Joel Hammond comes in. His blog has become a sudden Ground Zero for Dakich memoirs. Nick Hurm brings perhaps the best gems, including:
Dakich took Pete Stella and I out to Fricker’s after the 2001 season. I never forget his impression of Kevin Netter. He took a salt shaker for his body and a pair of forks for his legs and was running it around the table.
You basically have to read the rest of them. ◼ Hammond Bacon

The Intensity Never Left Him

There aren’t enough words in the unabridged dictionary to thank you, Nam Y. Huh from the Associated Press, for remembering why we loved ol’ Dan Dakich in the first place. He and Indiana won their first game on the road at Northwestern, 85-82.
I like to imagine that, moments before this photo, Dakich merely flexed and his sportcoat flew off.

I’m … I’m speechless.
Indiana University is making plans to finish the basketball season without Kelvin Sampson. The coach of the Hoosiers is not expected to be with the team when they play at Northwestern Saturday.A source close to the situation tells Eyewitness Sports that officials from the IU administration have met with assistant basketball coach Dan Dakich about taking over the basketball team as interim head coach for the rest of the season.
So, to repeat. Dan Dakich — the guy BGSU cast aside last year for many reasons, including this — will now coach Indiana basketball for the rest of the year. Read more
