But … The Avatar!
≡ Category: Bowling Green, Football, MAC | ≅ 2 Comments
Just what I needed what now. The MAC football preseason poll:
WEST DIVISION (6-5-4-3-2-1 point system)
1. Central Michigan 207
2. Ball State 168
3. Western Michigan 143
4. Toledo 98
5. Eastern Michigan 80
6. Northern Illinois 60EAST DIVISION (7-6-5-4-3-2-1)
1. Bowling Green 206
2. Miami 202
3. Buffalo 145
4. Kent State 137
5. Temple 120
6. Ohio 119
7. Akron 78
Great. Now there are expectations for this team again.

Yeah, we’re about a month away from college football, and stuff. Might as well get The Avatar locked and loaded:

Yes, That’s Drool On The Keyboard

The last couple of days I’ve spent probably more than two (2) hours aggregate on this new beta fantasy baseball game called Baseball Boss, which I learned about from Tuffy, who learned about it from TechCrunch.
Follow the TechCrunch link for referrals if you want to give it a whirl, although I’ll warn you since you’re basically hearing about this fourth-hand, there may not be spots left. But on the plus side, if you tell someone about it, and they tell someone, that second someone will be Kevin Bacon. Which will make for a great conversation start at your next dinner party. Read more

Loren Hargrove Arrested For Cocaine
≡ Category: Bowling Green, Football | ≅ 10 Comments
Update: March 16, 2009: Hargrove was cleared of these charges a couple months later, and this past weekend I interviewed him for a Toledo Free Press article where he was able to tell his side of the story.
Police in Botkins said they seized two kilos of suspected cocaine Monday night, and arrested two people.
They said one of the suspects, 23-year old Loren Hargrove, is a recent graduate of Bowling Green State University, where he was a football standout.
Hargrove was one of BGSU’s defensive captains last year, and he’s still in Shelby County jail. If you look at WHIO’s video report, you’ll see a visibly scared shitless BGSU graduate trying to figure out what the hell happened.
He says it was a misunderstanding. I’d like to believe that.

Another BGSU Center Drafted
≡ Category: Bowling Green, Football | ≅ 1 Comment
Step right up, Kory Lichtensteiger, and welcome to the Denver Broncos. You’re entering a league that also drafted former BGSU center Scott Mruczkowski in 2005, who’s still with the Chargers. Now, let’s see if ViewImages has any good photos of Mr. Lichtensteiger…
Hmm. No results found. Oh well. You’ll have your picture taken many a time once you make a name for yourself at Mile High!

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
≡ Category: Basketball, Bowling Green | ≅ Leave a Comment

Ohio 68, Bowling Green 66, 2OT ◼ I suppose when BGSU has to play two overtimes without Kate Achter, and the second OT without Tara Breske, these kinds of upsets are bound to happen.
So after the BG men bowed out of the season back on Tuesday, I really have no peripheral reason to care about college basketball, except to see if the MAC gets two bids to the men’s tournament.

On Saturday, as my endeavors this weekend involve a shift at Deadspin and a Toledo-Western game, the Bowling Green basketball team has the chance to dethrone the streaking Kent State, who comes to Anderson Arena. Read more

Dakich Stories, As Shared By BG Alum
≡ Category: Basketball, Bowling Green | ≅ Leave a Comment
Of all the Bowling Green-alum sports media socialites out there, I’m probably the only one who never did any actual reporting while in college. (Credibility is for chumps, if you ask me.) Therefore I’m unable to provide any anecdotal awesomeness of Dan Dakich during his days at Bowling Green.
But that’s where Joel Hammond comes in. His blog has become a sudden Ground Zero for Dakich memoirs. Nick Hurm brings perhaps the best gems, including:
Dakich took Pete Stella and I out to Fricker’s after the 2001 season. I never forget his impression of Kevin Netter. He took a salt shaker for his body and a pair of forks for his legs and was running it around the table.
You basically have to read the rest of them. ◼ Hammond Bacon

Dan Dakich Beat The System
≡ Category: Basketball, Bowling Green | ≅ 10 Comments
I’m … I’m speechless.
Indiana University is making plans to finish the basketball season without Kelvin Sampson. The coach of the Hoosiers is not expected to be with the team when they play at Northwestern Saturday.A source close to the situation tells Eyewitness Sports that officials from the IU administration have met with assistant basketball coach Dan Dakich about taking over the basketball team as interim head coach for the rest of the season.
So, to repeat. Dan Dakich — the guy BGSU cast aside last year for many reasons, including this — will now coach Indiana basketball for the rest of the year. Read more
