Chris Henry Can Try Out For NFL
By Matt Sussman | May 7, 2008 | Filed Under Football
Then again, so can I. Doesn’t mean a team would want either one of us.
Stopping me from making a team is primarily my poor vertical jump, adequate throwing arm, and a tendency to try and stop the pass rush through UN sanctions. Stopping Chris Henry from making a team used to be his court-ordered house arrest, but that’s not an issue anymore. Now the only bugaboo left from him getting another chance at the pros is merely the fact that he’s Chris Henry.
Let’s put all this together. He was arrested four times in a seven-month span. He was suspended for half of his team’s season last year for those transgressions. Then he punched a Cincinnati student in the face, finally leading to his release. He’s under house arrest for a reason — because the court doesn’t want him being part of the general public.
But they’re fine with him being part of the NFL?
If I’m any team, I’d use three microseconds to generate an emphatic “no freakin’ way” to Chris Henry. The man needs to demonstrate a modicum of responsibility in his life, lest he jeopardize his team by getting in trouble and ultimately suspended again by the NFL, before teams should take a look at his football abilities at the wide receiver position.
It’s also possible that there’s just something about being part of the NFL culture that turns Henry’s blind eye to consequences. The league isn’t exactly a positive influence on even a noble human being, which is evident after reading Clayton Holmes’ articles over at BC. And if one’s a dickwad to begin with, then that just makes the millions of dollars that much more of an enabler.
Come to think of it, that’s the other reason I’m not going to try out for NFL teams. I’m insufferable enough as a non-famous person.
