UT Coach Search Going As Planned

By Matt Sussman | Apr 9, 2008 | Filed Under Basketball

carousel.jpg…well, maybe not how UT had it planned. But the carousel of candidates has been spinning non-stop. The coaches UT wants, they can’t have. The coaches UT can get, they don’t want.

Maureen Fulton’s been doing a ton of coverage on this story, and as it stands, it looks to be either former Providence coach Tim Welsh, former Saint Louis coach Brad Soderberg, or Notre Dame assistant Gene Cross.

(Dan Dakich is still completely available, by the way.)

Bringing in Welsh would be interesting, because then it would put UT exactly one year behind in the process that BGSU started. See, the Falcons got Louis Orr, a castoff from Seton Hall, which is a Big East team like Providence. This is the only point of information I can use to support the argument for “BG is a year ahead of UT in basketball progress,” and it seems valid enough, so I’ll stop there.

Whoever the coach may be, the way they’ll communicate with senior-to-be guard Jonathan Amos will not be the same as it was with him and Stan Joplin.

What, did Amos and Joplin have Dick Tracy radio wristwatches?

When they were in the double bonus they’d use CB lingo.

I DISTINCTLY heard Pig Latin. On one occasion, Stan to Amos: “onathon-Jay!! hink-Tay!” Another time after a great steal, Amos to Stan: “ig-Bay rin-Gay…”
