HollaMAC Girls: Ohiowned

balllosestotoledo.jpgHollaMAC Girls is your eye on the Mid-American Conference women’s basketball tournament. Here’s how the quarterfinals shaked out:

This much we know: Someone in Ohio’s going to win the MAC championship, as all four teams who advanced are from that sorta-heart-shaped region.

Toledo 65, Ball State 60 The heck? So after dropping seven straight games, UT has now rattled off four straight at the right time, following up a mild first-round upset of Buffalo Monday with an embiggened upset of the Cardinals Tuesday. What if Mark Ehlen’s team just keeps winning all the way through the conference tournament? Does he still resign?

Holla: Ta’Yani Clark, UT: 25 points (5-for-7 from 3 pt.), 9 rebounds; Kiley Jarrett, BSU: 13 points, 5 assists, 4 steals; Tamesha Scotton, UT: 11 points, 8 rebounds

Miami 65, Western Michigan 60 With 6:51 left in the game, Laura Markwood scored a layup for the RedHawks, putting them up by three points. That was the team’s last field goal. WMU’s ploy of having Miami shoot a ton of free throws backfired on them, as their final 12 points came via unpaid-for throws.

Holla: Laura Markwood, MU: 18 points, 13 rebounds; Amanda Jackson, MU: 17 points, 7 steals; Tiera DeLaHoussaye, WMU: 14 points, 8 rebounds, 7 assists

Ohio 76, Eastern Michigan 62 No joy in Ypsilanti, especially in the first half when they shot only 23 percent and trailed by 16. Come to think of it, there’s rarely joy in Ypsilanti on a regular day. Please carry on as normal, nothing to see here.

Holla: Jennifer Poff, OU: 15 points (4-for-9 from 3 pt.), 9 assists; Amanda Compton, EMU: 20 points (6-for-9 from 3 pt.); Colleen Russell, EMU: 20 points, 10 rebounds

Bowling Green 85, Kent State 57 Kent State was out-manned, outrebounded, out-shot, out-hustled, and out-everything’d. Schmack. Down.

Holla: Kate Achter, BGSU: 9 points, 11 assists, 4 steals; Tara Breske, BGSU: 16 points, 11 rebounds, 4 steals, 3 blocks; Ellie Shields, Kent: 19 points, 7 rebounds

Friday
Miami vs. Toledo, 12 noon
Bowling Green vs. Ohio, 2:30 p.m.

Could a BG-UT final be a-brewin’?

So I’m watching some Olympic water polo match online (yes, I know) and it’s halftime. The song they picked? Why, the instrumental version of “Cotton-Eye Joe.” Not sure what’s more shocking. That they’re playing the instrumental version of “Cotton-Eye Joe,” or that someone made an instrumental version of “Cotton-Eye Joe.” Is this how all water polo matches go? NBCOlympics.com
